Starting today, endorsers have the option to make their endorsements of applicants visible to the public. Currently, new members in all countries except Burkina Faso must secure online endorsements from at least six acquaintances in order to join Zidisha. Each endorser links a Facebook page to prove online identity, provides personal contact information, and responds to two questions: How do you know the applicant? What makes you confident that the applicant can be entrusted with a loan from our community? Up until now the responses have been used only by our staff in reviewing applications to join Zidisha. Now, if an endorser confirms consent to publish their endorsement, the new member's loan profile page will include a link to the endorser's public Facebook page and responses to the questions about the applicant. No private information will be included, and only the endorsements the endorser has consented to make public will be displayed. The purpose is to provide lenders with an additional tool to evaluate the credit-worthiness of applicants who do not yet have track records as Zidisha borrowers. All things being equal, the applicants whose endorsers have written original and thoughtful recommendations are likely to be better credit risks.
